12. Joy that doesn’t disappear

The night sky was full of stars. In the town it was dark. Out on the field, the shepherds were caring for their sheep. This was a hard job. But they had no rights. They were despised, just like thieves and robbers were.

Was there no helper or Savior for them? Did they just accept the fact that they were the lowest-of-the-low in society?

Tiredly, they leaned against a tree stump. But suddenly they were all wide awake. In the middle of the night, a great light shone. They shaded their eyes from the dazzling light so they could see better. And they were very, very afraid.

An angel, a messenger of God, came from heaven to them. Frightened, the shepherds stared at the messenger from God’s invisible world.

Angel: "Don’t be afraid! I bring you good news that will cause great joy for everyone. Today in the town of David the Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

Stunned, the shepherds listened carefully. A Savior! Great joy filled their hearts. God had not forgotten them.

Then there were a great many angels in the sky who praised God for the miracle of the birth of the Savior.

The shepherds went to the barn and found Mary and Joseph and baby Jesus. They were so joyful when they saw Jesus, the Savior.

This is also true: the Savior was also born for you. Ask the Lord Jesus to come into your life, and you’ll receive joy that will never leave you.
