27. Jesus dies on the cross

Child: "I think it’s so horrid of Judas to betray Jesus."

Child: "Why didn’t Jesus fight them? He could have freed Himself."

This is true, He could have, but it had to be this way.

Child: "I don’t understand it."

The Son of God came into the world to die for our sins. Through disobedience and guilt every person is separated from God. And the wages of sin is death. Jesus wanted to take this penalty upon Himself, in order to restore fellowship with God again.

Child: "Oh, I get it now."

The final decision was made by the judge. Whenever the nation celebrated their deliverance out of Egypt, the judge let a prisoner go free.

Pilate: "Whom should I release from prison this year? Jesus or Barabbas?"

Actually, Pilate wanted to let Jesus go free instead of the murderer, Barabbas, which is why he asked once again:

Pilate: "Do you want me to let Barabbas go free or Jesus?"

People: "We want Barabbas! Barabbas!"

Pilate: "And what should I do with Jesus?"

People: "Crucify Him! Crucify Him!"

And so it happened. The Son of God carried the heavy cross of wood on his bleeding back, all the way to the hill of Golgatha, in order to die in our place. He freely took the death penalty upon Himself, the one that we deserved. For six hours Jesus hung on the cross. Before He died, He said the three most important words in the whole world:

Jesus: "It is done!"

Then He closed His eyes and died for the sins of the whole world.

Everyone who believes in Jesus will have fellowship with God as well as eternal life. Do you believe that?

When the Son of God died, the sky grew pitch black – in the middle of the day! – and an earthquake shook everything. Shocked, the Captain said:

Captain: "This is surely the Son of God!"

In the evening, Jesus was laid in a grave, but He didn’t stay there. The best is yet to come!

I’ll tell you all about it in the next drama.
