82. The special submarine 2

Boy: "I’m curious to see what happens with Jonah."

Girl: "If he had been smart, he would have listened to God and wouldn’t have tried to run away from Him."

Boy: "He wouldn’t have gotten his clothes all wet either."

God wants to save – that’s why Jonah was to go to Nineveh.

It looked like the trip of a lifetime was over. If it weren’t for God. He wants to save! Even Jonah. And that’s why He sent a very special 'submarine' just for him. A huge fish swam close to the unwilling diver and swallowed him whole.

Jonah spent three days and three nights in the belly of the fish. In the depth of the sea, his flight from God was over. He called out to God in his utmost despair.

Jonah: "Lord, you had me thrown into the sea. All the waves enveloped me. I thought that I was going to die. But you saved me! Thank You so much! I will do whatever You tell me to do."

God hears everyone. He hears you as well when you’re down and sad.

He heard Jonah’s prayer and commanded the fish to swim to the shore and spit out the indigestible tenant.

God wants to save, which is why He told Jonah a second time.

God said: "Jonah, go to the great city of Nineveh and preach what I tell you to say."

Jonah went. (sounds of walking and the buzz of city noises in the streets)

Jonah: "Listen up! God sent me to you. In 40 days your beautiful city will be a pile of rubble. This is the punishment for your sin. For you are liars, adulterers and crooks. God sees everything, you murderers and thieves."

Appalled, the people listened. Jonah’s sermon spoke straight to their hearts.

Woman: "He’s right. We have sinned against God. What should we do about it?"

King’s messenger: "An order of the King! No one is allowed to eat or drink. Repent of your sins and call out to God. Perhaps He will hear us. Stop being unjust, and start a new life."

Imagine! The 120 000 inhabitants in this city called out to God. Adults and children alike. They repented of living their lives without God.

Days passed: 38, 39, 40. God didn’t punish them. He heard their prayers of repentance and He forgave them. Isn’t that wonderful? Everyone called on God and whoever did so was saved.

If that would only happen in our village, our city! God wants to save. You and many, many others.
