15. The baked Bible

Woman: "They’re coming! They’re coming!"

The woman was baking bread as she glanced out of the window and saw that persecutors of Christians were coming to her house. They would look through everything, take Bibles and songbooks and then burn them.

Men: "Open up! Open up immediately!" (noise of pounding on the door)

What should she do? She quickly took a Bible, wrapped her this, her dearest book in the bread dough and shoved it in the oven. Then, trembling, she opened the door and watched as the men threw open cupboards and drawers and looked through all her belongings.

What chaos! But they didn’t find anything. Loudly they scolded her and slammed the door shut. (noise of door slamming)

When it got quiet, the woman took the baked bread out of the oven found her Bible inside, undamaged.

It was forbidden to have a Bible in her country.

But she obeyed God more than man and secretly read God’s Word. This gave her strength and courage every day anew.

(play background music)

The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.

The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.

The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.

The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous.

They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold;

They are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.

By keeping them your servant is warned; in keeping of them there is great reward.

(Psalm 19,8-11 NIV)

Do you have a Bible at home? Don’t let it gather dust on your shelf. Read it and be glad about what God says to you.

And if you don’t have a Bible and would like one, please let me know.

Maybe the Bible will become your dearest book as well.
