Plays for children to perform

20. On the run 5

The horses’ hoofs pounded on the road to the King’s palace. It was raining cats and dogs. The carriage barely came to a stop when King Ahab jumped out and disappeared into the palace.

Ahab: "Isabel, Isabel, you can’t guess what happened today. Fire fell from heaven. Everyone saw that the God of Elijah is the one true God. Baal couldn’t help and all of his worshippers are dead."

The Queen heard every word. Would this report or even the rain convince her that the LORD is God? No. She was so angry to hear this!

Isabel: "I’m going to kill Elijah."

When Elijah heard that the queen wanted to kill him, he fled. He ran faster than he had ever run in his entire life. He ran almost 125 miles! But even then he didn’t feel safe. So he kept running south. His fear drove him to the desert.

What do you do when you’re afraid?

God is there! Elijah always let God lead him. But this time he let his fear lead him. When he couldn’t go another step, he sat down under a bush and prayed:

Elijah: "Lord, I can’t anymore. Let me die."

God is there. But He didn’t answer this prayer with a "yes". God let Elijah sleep and then sent an angel to wake him up.

Angel: "Elijah, get up. Eat and drink something!"

Elijah opened his eyes and looked around. He discovered a pitcher of water and roasted bread right near him. It tasted great!

And Elijah slept another round and the same thing happened again.

God is there. The messenger of God recognized this truth when he saw the love with which God cared for him, here in the middle of the desert. Now he was able to hear God’s voice again. And with a new mission he went back.

God is there! You also don’t need to be afraid. I want to encourage you with a verse from the Bible:

"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 27:1)
